Iconoclasm

The world Trade center memorial is a good example of iconoclasm because of the criticism of the memorial. Many feel that the memorial does not fill the void of the missing towers. There were several proposals to rebuild the towers instead of having a memorial. However the idea ended when families of the victims felt a memorial was more appropriate. Although there hasn’t been any known attempts of iconoclasm I feel that there will be in the future due to the many conspiracies surrounding  the tragedy  of 911.

Pop Icon

“Andy Warhol Marilyn Monroe 1964” created by Richard Pettibone is a great piece of art to describe icon art. Marilyn Monroe is probably the most well-known pop icon of all time. Marilyn Monroe was very popular in her time; however her legacy is still important to society today. Almost everyone can identify her face, even after many generations have passed.  Marilyn Monroe was not a prodigious actress or singer but her legacy is incredible.

To signify non- representational art I chose to do “Suprematist Composition: Airplane Flying” by Kazimir Malevich. I thought this work was appropriate to represent an example of non- representational art because the meaning is not clear .At first it just looks like shapes, but the picture shows an airplane flying.  The huge rectangle in the middle is the base of the plane.  Overall the artist work does not refer to the natural or objective world.

Abstraction

I chose to do a piece by Pablo Picasso to represent Abstraction.  The piece is called “Women of Algiers, Variation N”. This painting displays women that appear to be upside down.  The women also feature body parts that do not look natural. For example, the knees on one of the woman appear to be bigger than normal and have a circular shape. I also noticed that the women do not have faces and do not appear to be wearing clothing. This piece may show how Picasso viewed women; Overall the piece is not how the natural eye sees women.

Representational Art

Representational Art displays natural objects in a recognizable form.  “Mount Vesuvius at Midnight” is a work from artist Albert Bierstadt.  For many centuries tourists have been attracted to Mount Vesuvius in Italy. Mount Vesuvius erupts periodically, when Albert heard that the volcano erupted again he immediately went to Italy to capture the beauty of the volcano.  Albert’s work was highly realistic and has the ability to capture the imagination of many. What I found interesting about the painting was that it was different seeing the mountain at night

Form Vs Content

"Picabo" is a piece by artist Beatriz Milhazes. Beatriz form is always started with a square, and then she builds on top of it. The content of her work is much more meaningful. Beatriz Milhaze’s work is inspired by her Brazilian culture.  Ruffled blouses, church facades, exotic plants and several other beauties she discovered in her county all inspire her work. Beatriz’s work also features beautiful colors which are referenced to the kaleidoscope of Brazilian Culture.  Beatriz explains that she uses many colors because it constantly moves the eyes of her audience. Understanding the reasoning behind her work and her culture helps me better connect with the artist.
